Aromatherapy

aromatherapy

While there are many people who are quick to dismiss the healing powers of aromatherapy the truth is that the rich history of aromatherapy can quickly dismiss those who dismiss it as nothing more than a nice fragrance.  In essence, aromatherapy is the use of oils from herbs that are believed to have healing powers in combination with a massage. Since massage is commonly accepted in physical therapy as useful and herbs and oils make up a great deal of medications, beauty products, and skin ointments it is not unreasonable to conceive that aromatherapy could have some medicinal value. Oils and herbs have been used throughout history from the Egyptians to the Greeks to the Machiavellian time periods as relaxation, wellness, and the treatment of common illness. The Egyptians began using oils to perform bodies for death and as fragrances.  A few decades later the Romans used oils to relax after bathing and by Arabs for perfumes to enhance beauty.  Throughout time the uses for aromatherapy differed and improved to fight illness, as digestives, and to improve mood, energy, and overall wellness. For examples in the current society, consider the treatment of poison ivy or poison oak.  The common treatment for either of these infectious rashes is calamine lotion which is derived from the oil of the plant. Along the same lines, dentists use clove oil to lessen the pain of a toothache which is a commonly accepted treatment and clove oil is derived from herbs.  Thus, it is easy to see that even in today’s society herbs have close links to wellness on a daily basis.  Therefore, it is only reasonable to conclude that herbs can play a therapeutic role when it comes to their use in aromatherapy treatment to aid in one’s overall wellness. Additionally, many of the same herbs that are used in aromatherapy are also found in beauty products that line pharmacy shelves such as shampoo, soap, makeup, perfumes, and more. Skin and hair care products especially make use of many herbs that are similar to those used in Roman times to improve skin and the overall beauty of your appearance.  Most women who have gone down in history noted for their looks used similar bathing regimes of modern day woman to achieve that look which means that herbs and oils have essentially been used since the beginning of time to improve wellness and beauty.
